I secretly get excited about my birthday every year. But since leaving my mothers nest at 18 they have NEVER been the same. On Wednesday I turned 34, hoping to wake up to the smells of hot pancakes on the griddle, bacon frying and fresh squeezed o.j. (o.k. I never got fresh o.j.). The anticipation of my birthday was the best feeling in the world as a child. We always got special attention with reminders from Mom and Dad. We'd plan friend birthday parties and sleepovers, we'd plan what we were going to eat, what kind of cake we were going to have and most of all what gifts we were going to get. I never minded going to school on my birthday because Mom would always make the best treats. In 5th grade my Mom had balloons and candy bars delivered for the whole class.
After all these years I've finally come to realize (yes, I'm a little slow) that the reason it's so different is because life keeps on going it doesn't stop like it did as a child (although maybe it should). I should have taken the day "off", but that would mean not changing any dirty diapers, no breakfast or lunch for Ian and no dinner made (I guess we could have made a run to Wendy's).
My husband did take me out to lunch (Carinos) and then we went to Sears and bought a new food processor. He also brought me flowers and a very sweet card. So, I can't complain it wasn't a "bad" day, it reminded me that those birthdays as a child are unforgettable and I hope my children have similar memories of their birthdays when they are grown.

I totally know what you mean. I still get that birthday excitement too, and while my hubby does a great job making it a good day--and he never forgets! I guess I'm secretly wishing for the whole hoopl--people singing to me everywhere I go, parades in my honor, presents galore, and a big fat birthday cake with candles I can wish upon.
We should start a new revolution where adults can party like kids for birthdays--pinatas and all!!!
I'm glad you had a great day!
that was supposed to say the whole hooplad!
i mean hoopla--i can't get this right can i?
"Schmirthday" - funny - love it.
In that same spirit I drew a little cartoon for my most recent post celebrating my sister's birthday. I think it illustrates your new word.
Happy Birthday! I had forgotten that you "share" March with me :) I'll be 34 on Friday. Strange, I don't feel 34 most of the time. But what is 34 supposed to feel like? My dad always says that you're only as old as you feel. I figure he's about right :) Happy day college roomie!
Happy Birthday! (late) I'm glad you had a good day. A food processor is a fun toy!:>
Well, late happy birthday! I get excited about birthdays in general, but my hubby doesn't. I always want to do something fun and cater to him all day, but he'd rather not make a fuss. I say, make a fuss! It's one day a year. I think remembering our childhood birthdays is really a tribute to our wonderful mothers! They are the best! By the way, you have a darling family and I found your blog from Kim's.
sorry i forgot. i'm crumby about remembering birthdays.
love the utube toon. made me smile.
happy late birthday!
